For avid bird-watchers, Borneo is the place to be from 15th to 17th October 2010, as the Borneo Bird Festival is being held at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC), Sepilok Sandakan, Sabah. The RDC is a centre for environmental education situated within the famous Kabili-Sepilok Forest Reserve.

If you love any and everything to do with birds, there’s a flock of activities in store for you. Shoot birds – with your camera of course, and take part in the photography competition. Or join the Borneo Bird Race, a fun-cum-learning bird-watching activity where teams of 3 competitors race for a specific time period at designated sites to watch, identify and record as many bird species as possible. The team that records the highest number of species is declared the winner.

You can learn Nature Sketching amidst Sabah’s awe-inspiring natural surroundings, with Malaysia’s renowned nature and wildlife artist Teh Yew Kiang. Join his personalised sessions at the RDC, to learn sketching techniques that will help all budding artists. They are open for the age group 14 years and above, and are highly recommended for family groups and students of the natural sciences. As seats are limited to 15 people per session, participation is on a first-come-first-served basis.

There’s also a daily guided bird-watching tour and a Rainforest by Night walk; exhibitions, plenty of exciting activities for children and lots of lively programs at the Festival. There are minimal fees to attend the lectures, workshops and guided tours. Make sure you register early, as capacity is limited, and this is a not-to-be-missed event for bird-lovers.
