Bengaluru International Airport (BIA) resumed normal flight operations on Wednesday, ending the month-long seven-hour closure of the runway for maintenance work. The runway was fully operational from 5.30pm on Tuesday.
It was closed from 10.30am to 5.30pm between March 11 and April 3 for recarpeting the runway surface.
Officials said with the second phase of maintenance work beginning Wednesday, the runway will now be closed for two 30-minute slots at non-peak hours - from 10am to 10.30am (post-morning peak time) and 5.30pm to 6pm (prior to evening peak-time). Authorities said flights won't be disrupted and expect the work to be completed by May 4 before monsoon sets in.
The airport handles 350 aircraft movements and services 35,000 passengers daily. BIA's air traffic grew by 7% to touch 1,16,851 flight movements and 12.53 million passengers in 2011. |
