The charity Tourism Concern has launched a new interactive map detailing alleged human rights abuses linked to the tourist industry in South India.

The map, which was created in collaboration with the Kabani, an Indian NGO that campaigns for sustainable economic development, outlines a range of issues in the coastal parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

Among the tourism-related issues covered are displacement and land rights, sex tourism and environmental problems.

The map can also be used by tourists to report any issue they may have witnessed, with reports subject to independent verification as per a report in UK Telegraph.

“In South India we have witnessed a range of issues related to the actions of the tourism industry” said Peter Bishop, a project manager for Tourism Concern.

“The most common is displacement of populations to make room for large scale tourism development, but tourism-related problems such as water shortages, corruption and environmental destruction also occur all too frequently.”

Each report describes an issue, and outlines the actions that are being taken to address it and whether those actions have succeeded or are still ongoing.

The website also pinpoints the source of the reports, including press articles, photos and videos. The map can be accessed at tourismconcern.org.uk/tourismwatch-southindia.
