Railways to have 2500 bio-toilets next year

These toilets do not discharge on tracks and turn human excreta into an odourless substance with the help of bacteria in the tank

The Indian Railways has decided to expedite the manufacture of bio-toilets, which do not discharge on tracks and turn human excreta into an odourless substance with the help of bacteria in the tank.

The manufacture of about 2,500 such toilets — developed in a joint venture with the DRDO — is on the cards next financial year. The cost of each bio-toilet is estimated to be around Rs 1 lakh.
