Mayong, a small village near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Morigaon district, about 50 km away from Guwahati, has an alluring history of magic and sorcery.

In a bid to promote the twin attractions of Morigaon - Mayong and Pobitora - the district administration, tourism and forest departments have organized the Mayong-Pobitora festival, a three-day cultural and tourism jamboree that kickstarted on Friday.

Tourism minister Chandan Brahma, forest minister Rockybul Hussain and cultural affairs minister Pranati Phukan attended the inaugural session of the festival. "Our intention is to promote tourism through Mayong's culture, tradition and wildlife. This festival is one in a series of efforts to attract tourists. Mayong has the potential to become a popular tourist attraction," Morigaon election officer Biswajit Phukan said.
