IRCTC to introduce booking facility over telephone

Will facilitate rail travellers to book tickets by calling on a new telephone no 138 using cash cards bought from IRCTC counters

Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) is all set to launch a new inquiry number (138) that will facilitate rail travellers to book tickets by calling on it using cash cards bought from IRCTC counters.

The facility will start shortly since IRCTC has received the department of telecommunication's nod. Calls on the new number, which aims to provide faster services to the passengers, can be made from all telecom operators.

"It will provide a slew of value-added passenger-related services across the country and is expected to be launched soon," a senior IRCTC official said.

Rail passengers can have access to host of travel information - availability of accommodation, tatkal booking, train number and its name running between two destinations, concessions and cancellation rules - thanks to this premium service.

Railway inquiry number (139), which offers basic service like PNR details, will continue. Initially, the service will be available in English and Hindi, and will be gradually extended to all regional languages.

The new number (138) is likely to reduce the load off the existing rail enquiry number (139) that handles more than 8 lakh calls daily.

IRCTC is moving towards a multiple-number inquiry system that will ensure easy accessibility for passengers. It will ease passengers' woos during festive seasons and holidays when there is heavy traffic. It will also ensure hassle-free service when rail services and operations get disrupted like dense fog during winter that leads to congestion in the system.

"The new number with upgraded technology will cater to passengers with quick and correct information," a rail official said.
