The authorities of Punjabi University Patiala have constructed a new building of the department of tourism, hospitality and hotel management on the university campus . The four-storey building has been equipped with a house-keeping lab, a sixty-cover restaurant, basic training kitchen with pantry, a well-furnished computer lab based on the smart room concept and three class rooms.

Some seniors of university said they have started this course keeping in mind the ever-growing demand of skilled workers in the industry. This will also help the students in saving a huge amount of money that they have been paying to study these courses in foreign countries as per a report by Parvesh Kumar Sharma in TOI.

"The Indian government is also drafting its policies and programmes to promote this sector, which will generate more and more jobs for the students doing these courses," said VC of university Dr Jaspal Singh when asked whether they have received any help from union government. Director of the department, Dr SM Verma disclosed that the union ministry of tourism has sanctioned a grant of Rs 1 crore for starting constructing of the second phase this new building.

"The union government is encouraging universities and colleges to start these courses. Since the hospitality industry is contributing around 6 per cent in the GDP of India union government wants to develop this industry at a big level" said Verma.
