Taj Mahal remains one of the biggest tourist attractions

 Earned Rs 20 crore through entrance fee last year

Taj Mahal, the 17th century monument of love in Agra, has proved to be one of the largest tourist attractions in the country once again, earning Rs 20 crore through entrance fee last year. 

As per a PTI report, out of the total Rs 87 crore earned by the Archaeological Survey of India last year through entrance fee at ticketed monuments across the country, the Taj alone earned Rs 20 crore.

The earnings by Taj are up by more than 15 per cent in the year ended March 2011. While the Taj earned Rs 14.36 crore in 2008-09, it got Rs 17.24 crore in 2009-10 and Rs 19.89 crore in 2010-11.

There are altogether 116 centrally-protected monuments whose entry is through tickets and the total revenue earned in 2010-11 is Rs 87.3 crore.

Delhi's Qutub Minar earned Rs 10 crore in the year, while Humayun's Tomb earned Rs 6.15 crore and Red Fort Rs 5.90 crore.

All the three are World Heritage Sites in the national capital.
