Tourism Minister seeks Rs.22,000 Crores from PM for developing Tourism

Sahay also sought rationalisation of taxes in tourism sector and extension of visa on arrival facility to more countries to draw more foreigners to India

Tourism minister Subodh Kant Sahay met PM Manmohan Singh for an enhanced outlay of about Rs 22,000 crore under the 12th plan to implement new programmes.

Sahay also sought rationalisation of taxes in tourism sector and extension of visa on arrival facility to more countries to draw more foreigners to India. Accompanied by senior officials from different ministries including external affairs, highways, finance and Planning Commission, Sahay sought inclusion of hotels and theme parks in the infrastructure lending list.

Asked about the PM's response, Sahay said, "The prime minister assured us to look into all these issues." The ministry has demanded Rs 21,900 crore as enhanced outlay to create additional employment generation of 24.9 million direct and indirect jobs. "Our aim is to draw 11.24 million foreign tourists by the end of 12th plan,'' said Sahay.
