The system will be put to place in New Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bengluru, Chennai and Kochi airports. Meant to enhance the security, it will have passenger information dispatched to the airports in electronic format and will be implemented in coordination with immigration authorities at Indian destinations in two phases. This means that Airlines in India will soon have to give details of passengers on international flights from India within 15 minutes of takeoff as an Advance Passenger Information System (APIS) will be put in place at six airports.
APIS will be implemented in all the 26 international airports in the country in a centralised mode and the information will be monitored and analysed in coordination with the database of immigration department.
Chennai’s Anna International Airport will be one among the six international airports in the country where APIS is to be implemented in the first phase under the directions of the Union home ministry. This information was given by a senior Airport Authority of India (AAI) official. |
