Goa will soon have tourist taxis driven by women drivers, operating from Panaji, Margao, Mapusa and Vasco, for the exclusive use of women passengers and families.

The service is sought to be introduced by Goa tourism development corporation (GTDC), in collaboration with Green Earth Translogistic Pvt Ltd (GETPL), a Mumbai-based company. GETPL will train the women drives and operate the service.

GTDC chairman Nilesh Cabral told TOI that they intend to commence the service in the next 45 days. He added that it will be a good employment opportunity for local women drivers looking for non-conventional job options.

Though Mumbai and Delhi have taxis run by women drivers, the services offered in Goa will be slightly different as the women drivers will be trained in etiquette and also act as tourist guides.

GETPL representative Yogesh Ambe, who made a presentation of the service to the GTDC board of directors on Wednesday, said the tourist guide service is an addition in Goa as the state is an international tourist destination.

For a start the taxi services will be available from 7am to 6pm. The hours of service will be increased depending on its success.

"Service charges will be in accordance with the fare fixed by the transport department, and passengers will be given printed receipts," Ambe said.
