The West Bengal Government has identified historic buildings in Murshidabad, Jhargram (Midnapore West) and Mahishadal (East Midnapore) to be restored for promotion of heritage tourism.

Plans are afoot to restore the Wasif Manzil — a palace built by the erstwhile Nawab of Murshidabad, Wasif; Jhargram Palace and Mahishadal Rajbari (palace). Jhargram Palace and Mahisadal Palace are known for their distinct architectural styles.

According to Vikram Sen, Principal Secretary of the State Tourism Department, while the restoration work would be left to private investors, the State Government would provide administrative support.

The State Government has requested UNWTO (World Tourism Organisation) to prepare a roadmap to promote cultural and heritage tourism in these places as per a report in Business Line.

“A team is likely to visit soon to initiate the process,” Sen told newspersons on the sidelines of a meeting on Heritage Tourism here on Monday.
