West Bengal CM mulls developing more tourist hotspots in Darjeeling hills

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today scouted for probable tourist hostspots in the Darjeeling hills and called for developing several new spots at Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik in Darjeeling district.

Stressing upon boosting traditional tourism centres which is one of the main revenue earners for the hills, she called for developing other spots of tourism importance to attaract more domestic and foreign visitors.

"This would push the revenue earning capacity for the Darjeeling hills. Darjeeling has become so much congested nowadyays that the tourists have to look for other areas in Kurseong, Kalimpong and Mirik," she told reporters here on the second day of her visit to Darjeeling disrict.

"There are more areas in the hills which need to be developed as potential tourism spots," she said. 

She called for constructing an eco-tourism centre at Alagarh in the Kalimpong sub-division of Darjeeling hills during a visit to Lamahata at an altitude of nearly 6,500 feet which was launched as a new tourist destination recently.

"I have told the district magistrate (of Darjeeling) to do the needful in this regard," she said.

During her journey from Darjeeling to Kalimpong with a convoy of cars, Mamata stopped several times to inspect scenic spots and interact with the people.
