With the main tourist sites on the Buddhist Circuit in Uttar Pradesh lying in a state of neglect, UP's Tourism Department is exploring the possibility of roping in the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to provide funds for infrastructure development.
At present, the state has six main Buddhist sites at Sarnath, Kushinagar, Kaushambi, Kapilvastu, Sankisa and Shravasti that qualify as prominent Buddhist sites in the State. All are lacking basic amenities like clean toilets and good roads.
The state government's move follows a decision by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to not provide a loan for development of the Buddhist circuit in the State.
This was decided at a meeting in New Delhi between the representatives of JICA and Central government officials at which tourism officials from UP were also present as per a report in TOI.
Though secretary and director general of UP Tourism, Manoj Kumar Singh, said a proposal of Rs 390 crore was submitted to JICA in 2005 for Phase II development of the circuit with a 10-year perspective till 2015, JICA turned down UP's request.
