Tunnels will be new tourist attraction in J & K

Two parallel 8.5km tunnels between Quazigund to Banihal are being built where each tunnel will be dedicated for only one-way traffic

Tunnels are set to add to the tourist attraction in the already picturesque Valleys in Kashmir in the days to come with the laying of the foundation stone for the longest road tunnel in the country on Monday as per a report by K balchand in The Hindu.

The twin-tube tunnel is part of the 15.25-km National Highway which will be converted into four lanes at a cost of Rs. 1,987 crore. This stretch will also have another tunnel of 600 metres and nine bridges and reduce the travel time between the two regions by half — to about four to five hours.

The Quazigund-Banihal tunnel, located in the Pir Panjal mountain ranges, will be the longest and widest twin-tube tunnel in the country provided with air ducts and inter-connected at a gap of 500 metres providing for easy crossovers for vehicles and passengers.
