First Indian chief architect of Chandigarh, M N Sharma on Thursday alleged that while UT administration wanted to project the city as a tourist destination, the Capitol Complex, which was designed by Le Corbusier, was out of bounds for general public.

"Most visitors are disappointed at the time consuming process of getting permits to see the buildings and take photographs," he said at a press conference.

"The Open Hand is out of bounds. The whole area of the Capitol Complex is barricaded with barbed-wire fencing. The entire area gives the appearance of a concentration camp and visitors are greeted by the gunmen. Even the citizens of Chandigarh have not seen the remarkable architectural edifices for which it attained world fame," he rued.

"It's a paradoxical situation. While the administration wants to encourage tourism for great economic benefits to the city, at the same time it aids discouraging hurdles to the tourists," he said.
