India could see a rise in leisure and business tourists from aboard as well as those visiting for medical treatments over the next six months, according to respondents in a recent survey conducted by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci).
In the first three months of 2013, the number of foreign tourists visiting India inched up to 2.027 million from 1.98 million a year ago, but year-on-year growth dropped to 2.3% from 10.9% earlier, according to a Press Information Bureau statement.
But 46% of the respondents in the Ficci survey said they are confident that visits by foreign tourists will increase in the coming six months; 37% of those surveyed said leisure visits presented the highest growth potential for India’s tourism industry, followed by business travel and medical tourism, and then adventure tourism.
Ficci, in a report released Tuesday, said that over the past 15 days it interviewed 480 people related to India’s tourism industry for the survey, including hotel and airline executives, tour operators, travel agents, and tourism associations.
