Even though Auli near Joshimath, Uttarakhand may have earned international fame, the tourism potential of this site still remains incompletely tapped due to the poor Government efforts. Holding the South Asian Federation Winter Games there had only a temporary effect on this site as the facilities developed then have not been maintained by the authorities.
The SAF Winter Games were held at Auli in 2010 when this location received considerable attention. However the Government has failed to capitalise on this due to its own incompetence. The cable car at Auli has been out of operation for two years now. This is preventing tourists from visiting this site which is best visited in the winters.
Since the completion of the SAF winter games, the cable of the Joshimath-Auli ropeway has been lying damaged. The department concerned too is incurring a considerable loss due to the ropeway being out of operation. The locals and those employed in winter sports and tourism related works complain that the State Government has turned a blind eye towards Auli after the Winter Games in 2010 as per a report in Daily Pioneer.
