Suspension of flights to Kullu has compounded the problems of tourism sector in theKullu-Manali circuit as high-end tourists are staying away from the valley. After a slump in tourism and agitations by taxi operators, now the suspension of flights to Kullu airport till mid-September is hurting locals badly.

As per a TOI report, High-end tourists, mostly from abroad, are cancelling their tour plans to Manali. Hundreds of taxi operators at Bhuntar airport have again become jobless. Travel agents say this is the time when high-end tourists from other nations visit Kullu valley for trekking, but unavailability of flights is forcing them to cancel their bookings as they don't want to travel for 15 hours on the congested Delhi-Manali highway. Even the nearest airport at Chandigarh is about 10 hours from Manali.

Saying that landing on congested runways of Kullu and Shimla could be dangerous in heavy fog and bad weather, Air India suspended its flights till mid-September. Hoteliers and others associated with tourism feel cheated by the government, which had resumed flights to Kullu and Shimla only to appease agitating public in mid-May.
