Tourism Budget gets mere nine per cent hike

The bulk of the allocation announced in the budget has been earmarked for the 'Incredible India' campaign which aims to attract more tourists to the country

 India's tourism sector Friday got an allocation of Rs.1,282 crore for 2012-13 - a mere 9.5 per cent increase over the previous year.

The allocation last year was Rs.1,170 crore. 

The bulk of the allocation announced in the budget has been earmarked for the 'Incredible India' campaign which aims to attract more tourists to the country. 

Of the allocation, Rs.348.20 crore has been earmarked for the 'Incredible India' campaign, which showcases India's major holiday destinations. Last fiscal, it was Rs.347.75 crore. as per IANS report.

The campaign has been quite successful and has picked up many prestigious international awards. 

To promote domestic tourists, the budget has allocated Rs.81 crore, a hike from last year's Rs.67.75 crore. 

Over 5.5 million foreign tourists visited India in 2010, an increase of 8.1 per cent over the previous year. In 2009, 5.17 million foreign travellers visited India, while 5.28 million visited the country in 2008. 

About Rs.548 crore has been earmarked for creating new infrastructural facilities like constructing budget accommodations, wayside amenities, tourist reception centres, refurbishment of monuments, adventure and sports facilities and illumination of monuments. In the last budget, the figure was Rs.499 crore.
