TripAdvisor announced the results of its second annual Cities Survey, revealing how global travellers view key tourist cities around the world. The results were compiled based on more than 54,000 responses from those who have recently written TripAdvisor reviews for featured cities around the world.
Ranking first for city with the best overall experience was Tokyo. The city also claimed top spots for helpfulness of locals, taxi service, local public transportation, and cleanliness of streets. Tokyo received high marks across the board, as it ranked among the top 10 in 13 of 16 categories in the survey.
“Tokyo has received high marks from TripAdvisor travellers, who praise the city for its hospitality, cleanliness and outstanding public transit system,” said Nikhil Ganju, Country Manager - India for TripAdvisor. “Mumbai faced tough competition from some of the top tourist cities and while it's overall rank was disappointing, it did live up to it's reputation for good food, nightlife & shopping, with the company of cities like Stockholm, Prague, Hanoi in these categories.”
Where does Mumbai stand in comparison to other cities (average score mentioned in certain categories):
ü ‘Helpfulness of locals’: Ranks above Dubai, London, Hongkong, Brussels, Marrakech
ü ‘Hotels’ and ‘Restaurants’: Mumbai scores an encouraging 7.67 and 8.06 respectively. It’s great since the scores are closer to those of the top cities - Dubai has scored 9.06 in ‘hotels’ category and New York 9.04 in ‘restaurants’ category.
ü ‘Nightlife’: Scores a high 7.27. New York comes out on top with 9.08 average score.
ü ‘Friendliness of taxi drivers’: It is just .2 points behind New York and ranks above Hongkong, Kuala Lumpur, Brussels, Beijing and Moscow.
ü ‘Value for money’: The average score of the cities is between 8.39 to 5.09 and Mumbai scores a healthy 6.21, ranking above Sydney, London, Rio de Janerio and just a few points behind Paris and New York.
ü ‘Comfort while travelling alone’: Mumbai scores only a 6.62 whereas Singapore, voted #1 in this category scores a 9.07.
ü ‘Shopping’: Mumbai ranks #22 with 7.54 average score and is not too far away from #1 city Dubai which has scored 8.84.
ü ‘Culture’: Scores a worthy 7.03, Rome is #1 with a score of 9.60.
ü ‘Cleanliness of the streets’ and ‘overall experience’: Ranks at the bottom.
