Pachamalai, a green hill range about 80 km north of Tiruchy, and the mangrove-rich Muthupettai lagoon in Tiruvarur district are set to witness more tourism development with the state government announcing initiatives for Rs 4.47 crore.
Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa has sanctioned funds to develop various amenities at these tourist spots. At Pachamalai hill station it is planned to establish tree-houses besides renovating existing guest house, improve facilities at the two waterfalls, upgrade foot tracks for mountain climbers, build hotels, restaurants, and children’s parks to attract tourists as per a DC report.
Pachamalai with 527.61 sq km area and located about 1,072 meters above sea level have many attractions like Periyapakkalam and Korayaru waterfalls besides being a habitat for 154 varieties of birds, 135 varieties of butterflies and around 50 species of deer besides grey squirrels, forest cats, peacocks and monkeys. Jayalalithaa has sanctioned Rs 2.30 crore to develop various amenities at Pachamalai.
Muthupettai (about 320 km from the state capital) which boasts of a 11,885 hectare mangrove attracting different species of birds during winter, will be developed as a major tourist attraction in Tiruvarur district.
