Indian Hotels Company, the owner of Taj Group of Hotels will open its 100th hotel on 7 March in its 110th year of operations.
The 200-room Taj Vivanta will open in Gurgaon, just outside Delhi. Taj Vivanta is positioned between luxury Taj and mid-market Gateway hotels. The Taj Vivanta at Gurgaon will be managed by the firm for property owners HB Estate Developers Ltd.
The 100th property starts operations at a time when business is dull, thanks to an economic slowdown in India. Hotel and room occupancy rates fell 10% and 1.6%, respectively, in the Indian subcontinent in the third quarter of the current fiscal. Increased room supply has resulted in a 12% decline in revenue per room, according to an investor presentation by Indian Hotels posted on its website.
Raymond Bickson, managing director and chief executive officer, Indian Hotels, said in February that there has been an overall 23% increase in supply in the nine months ended December from the year ago. Most of the supply, about 60%, has come in the upscale segment, he said.
