The Taj group is close to signing a management contract with arms dealer Suresh Nanda-ownedClaridges group to manage its 287-room five-star hotel at Surajkund near New Delhi.
The hotel, nestled in the Aravali hills, will be rechristened Vivanta by Taj from April 1 this year.
Nanda confirmed that Claridges is about to sign a contract with Taj Hotels for the property.
For Taj, this will be an important property as it stands en route to the Taj Mahal in Agra, which is a major component of the Golden Triangle — Delhi, Agra, Jaipur — for international travellers as per an ET report.
"Claridges does not have an all-India or global sales network. This destination is today mainly for domestic travellers. An association with Taj will give us a better reach," said Nanda, who owns the Claridges hotel in Lutyens Delhi, a hotel in Mussoorie, and another three-star hotel close to its Surajkund property.
In 2011, the Claridges group had signed a 99-year lease with Maharaja Vishwendra Pratap Singh to convert his palace into a hotel.
Since it opened in 2010, business for the Claridges Surajkund has been very seasonal.
At one point, the owners had even dropped rates to a level that was 25 per cent lower than in nearby Delhi hotels.
Now, with Taj taking over the management, Nanda hopes business will be more robust owing to the company's expansive sales and marketing network in India and internationally.
