Sky-rocketing airfares have failed to curb the Indian travellers' enthusiasm for five-star holidays as 38-40% travellers are ready to spend more than a lakh for summer getaways in and outside the country, according to travel websites.
Tripadvisor pegs the number at over 38% compared with about 35% last year for the travellers this summer going for holidays costing more than Rs. 100,000 as per an ET report.
Though high airfares are making Indians cut their travels shorter in order to fit it into the overall budget, people are exploring more such destinations where a lakh or more is needed.
"International bookings by Indians have doubled this year compared with the last one and to my mind it is because of an increase in carriers offering these routes," said Noel Swain, EVP at travel booking site Cleartrip.
Tours to US, Europe, South Africa and to multi-destinations within Asia normally cost around a lakh per person. Bookings for SAARC countries have grown 77% year-on-year, to Europe by 27%, West Asia by 36% and to Africa by a 129%, according to data on Cleartrip.
It is not only the international holiday spots that are seeing growth in terms of expenditure, but also domestic destinations where over a lakh is being spent, said Himanshu Singh, MD at online travel portal Travelocity.
"The popularity of five-star holidays taken inside the country is growing and booking for this premium segment has witnessed 30-32% growth this year," Singh said.
However, the average transaction size of short-haul travels has decreased this summer compared with last year as Indians are taking shorter breaks, for example a higher number of weekend trips instead of long vacations, industry experts said.
