Splash, the Wayanad Monsoon Carnival succeeded in ensuring a flow of tourists to Wayanad — the hill district where the fledgling tourism industry has been receiving a regular tourist flow during the otherwise dull monsoon season, say officials of the Wayanad Tourism Organisation (WTO). The flow of tourists was very thin in the past.
On the eve of the fourth edition of Splash which kick-started on Monday, coordinator K. Raveendran told DC that when WTO launched Splash in 2009 the tourism properties in Wayanad received an occupancy of less than 30 per cent. The occupancy increased to 40 per cent in 2010 and in 2011 the average occupancy was 70 per cent.”
“The industry also accepted the success of the carnival,” he said, adding that last year when the Business to Business meet was introduced, only around 100 travel agents responded, “but this year we have stopped registration as the number crossed 400.’’
