SpiceJet will start regional operations with short-haul flights from September after the central bank approved financing of its Bombardier Q400 aircraft by Export Import bank of Canada. Its Bombardier Q400 operations will start regional operations from its southern hub of Hyderabad, which has agreed to allow it the maximum morning slots for flights. as per a report by Tarun Shukla in Livemint, Tirupati will be its first flight. Aurangabad, Bhopal, Indore, Mangalore, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada will also be connected with flights.
“We are flying three cities (pairs) which nobody has ever connected,” said chief commercial officer Samyukth Sridharan. These include Hyderabad-Mangalore, Hyderabad-Aurangabad, Hyderabad-Madurai. Short-haul aircraft command a 4% fuel tax compared with up to 30% for say the medium-range Airbus A320s, and get waiver on landing parking charges at Indian airports. Sridharan said this will help avoid potential losses that come with launches.
The Low-fare carrier posted a first-quarter loss of Rs.71.96 crore against a profit ofRs.55.21 crore a year earlier because of high fuel costs and increasing competition that prevented it from raising fares. A “sudden spurt in capacity addition combined with irrational competitive pricing by the larger airlines resulted in a challenging operating environment,” the company said in a statement.
