After months of delay, seaplane charter flight services were finally inaugurated from the Juhu airport on Monday amid much fanfare. Bookings for these flights will commence from March 10.

At 4pm, an Cessna 206 amphibian aircraft took off from the Juhu airport and landed in Amby Valley 35 minutes later. "The one-way fare for a Mumbai-Amby Valley flight will be Rs 4,500-Rs 5,000,'' said Siddharth Verma, director of Mehair, the private firm that launched the services.

The commencement date for intercity flights from Juhu to Girgaum Chowpatty has not yet been announced as two more clearances-from the collector and Mumbai Port Trust-are awaited.

After inaugurating the services, state tourism minister Chhagan Bhujbal said seaplane flights will ease travel to visit various state tourist destinations. Jagdish Patil, MD of MTDC, said, "Seaplane services will boost tourism in the state as vacation destinations will turn into weekend ones."

Seaplane flights will be operated with Cessna 206 and Cessna 208 amphibian aircraft, which can seat four to nine passengers respectively, said a Mehair spokesperson.
