The ugly fencing and barricades around the Gateway of India may soon go. Authorities, who were planning to erect a fixed fence around the monument, have now decided to make the area from the Regal Circle to Radio Club a pedestrian only-zone.

While visitors to the monument will be screened where the zone begins, vehicles headed to the Taj Hotel will be given a dedicated single lane. Chief Secretary JS Saharia, who chaired last week's meeting, said he has asked the traffic police to work out the modalities and submit a report as per a report in Mumbai Mirror.

"The proposal is the initial stages," said Saharia. "I have asked our officers to prepare a feasibility plan. The idea is to create more space for tourists, women and children on the sea front."
