Rajasthan's three domestic and one international airport's total frequency of flights put together is less than one third of the total frequency of flights in Ahmedabad airport alone.
Rajasthan's biggest and only international airport at Sanganer has 30 flights a day against 130 in Ahmedabad, 45 in Guwahati and Kozhikode. Despite the less number of flights, Pink City is far ahead in the number of hotels and tourist destinations as per a report by Shoeb Khan in TOI.
The two other airports in Udaipur and Jodhpur have eight and four flights a day. The air traffic in the two cities, considered to be a major tourist destinations, are even less than the little known Bagdogra airport in Siliguri. Another airport in Kota is not operational since 1997. The newly constructed airport in Jaisalmer with an estimated cost of Rs 60 crore too, may find it difficult to attract airlines.
The figure paints a dismal picture of the state's aerial route despite most of its cities are listed on the world tourism map. The poor air connectivity is responsible for sheer neglect of many tourist destinations here, experts said.
Tourism minister Bina Kak agrees that poor connectivity is dampening the flow of tourists to far-flung areas known for natural beauty, unique history, culture and festivals. "It's high time that authorities concerned should prepare an action plan to improve and introduce more air connectivity," Kak says.
