Railways minister Pawan Kumar Bansal promised that the transporter will serve better quality food in trains than served in airlines, and it will be more balanced in diet.

"My food may be better than airlines. We will provide better food which will not be high in calories," Bansal said, adding that the transporter won't make profit by selling food in trains or stations.

In a move aimed at improving the quality of food, railways has started toll-free number (1800-111-321) empowering passengers to lodge complaints or offer suggestions about the catering service on the rail network.

The complaints and suggestions, received on the helpline operational during meal time (7 am to 10 pm) through the week, will be acted upon immediately, and the contract of the caterer can be terminated if the complaint is found to be justified enough.

After raising passenger fares, the minister promised to improve passenger services that included quality of food and cleanliness.

"We are determined to provide good food at reasonable price to every section of the passengers," Bansal said, adding that anyone can call and register the complaint that will be addressed immediately.

The minister assured that stringent action will be taken against erring catering contractors and steps will be taken to break the cartel in the Rs 2,000-crore catering business in railways.
