Tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir has been reeling under acute crisis of electricity, as the frequent power cuts has been barring the visitors to use the heating facilities. Tourists flock to the Kashmir Valley to witness the real heaven of earth when the whole region is covered with a white blanket during winters.

In spite of the recent snowfall in the valley, which led to road blockades, swarms of tourists visited here to catch a glimpse of the pictorial beauty. However, power crisis in the region intimidate the region's tourism as different sources of water freeze during winters. "It is true that the power consumption is less in winters. The production here comes down to less than 800 megawatts whereas our requirement is more than 2000 megawatts. Moreover, our lakes and rivers get dried up, glaciers do not melt and discharge of the water is less during winters," said Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir Asgar Samoon.

Hoteliers and houseboat owners are seeking government intervention in the power crisis to better the flow of tourists in the picturesque region. Travellers thronging from the warmer regions of the country find it difficult adjusting themselves in the chilling weather of the valley. Houseboat owners and hoteliers complain that tourists start yelling when they cannot use the heating equipments.
