At least 20 people have filed police complaints against an Andheri-based travel company, The American Holiday, alleging that the firm cheated them of lakhs of rupees by handing over vouchers for hotel reservations and air tickets that turned out to be fake.
Among the complainants are two couples, who had planned their honeymoon abroad, and were forced to call off the trip after losing over Rs 1 lakh each as per a report in Mumbai Mirror.
The fraud was discovered when a few complainants found that they weren't even booked on the flights they were supposed to board, and the mass resignation of around a dozen employees of the firm on January 23, who called up the clients to say they had been duped.
The firm, which launched its Mumbai operations around a year ago and had an office in Marol, also claimed to have branches in Delhi, Ahmedabad and Pune. All complaints against the firm, jointly owned by one Sambhav Raily, his wife Kamla, son Sanjay, and daughter Sudha, have been filed at the MIDC Police Station, Andheri (E). The Marol office has been shut since the time the entire scam came to light on January 24, and the firm owners have absconded.
