Thanneermukkom grama panchayat's novel project is all set to tap the tourism potential of Thanneermukkom Bund and Vembanad Lake.

The panchayat authorities have initiated a project report for implementing this programme and would soon appoint an agency for rolling out a master plan.

Grama panchayat president K Padmavathy Amma said that though Thanneermukkom Bund and Vembanad Lake were visited by many holidaymakers daily, the panchayat had not taken any steps to promote tourism.

"Tourism potential is tremendous here as we are situated on the bank of the scenic Vembanad Lake. If the panchayat implements this project successfully, it would help the villagers and the panchayat to earn handsome revenue. As per the preliminary estimate, Rs 1 crore is the expected cost of this project,'' Amma added.

The barrage, commissioned in 1975, was constructed across a narrow portion of Vembanad Lake between Thanneermukkom in the west and Vechoor in the east with the objective of preventing saline water intrusion into Kuttanad during summer.

The panchayat's standing committee chairman on welfare Anto Mathew said they would set up a floating restaurant, which will be operated in the Vembanad Lake. We are also planning to build a children's park, garden and shops selling handicrafts, ornamental fish and other goods. The shops and floating restaurant would be operated by Kudumbashree and the self-help groups. Meanwhile, traditional fishermen of the panchayat would also be employed to run the fish shops.
