Negative perception issue plagues the Indian adventure tourism industry

Seventy-nine percent respondents of a survey feel safety measures that Indian operators employ are not at par with their international counterparts

TripAdvisor revealed the findings from its annual Adventure Travel Survey 2014, collected from 1034 respondents. The survey, now in its second year is aimed at understanding the preferences and concerns of the Indian traveler with respect to adventure travel in the country. 

Traveller’s Tales

Rationale for experimentation: 59% people say that they indulge in such activities for gaining varied experiences in life, while 32% like the thrill, excitement and sense of risk attached to it. 31% feel that such sports give them a sense of achievement and accomplishment

Authorised operator: While Indians are considered price sensitive travellers, yet majority of respondents (59%) said they will not go in for cheap trips being offered these days by the tour operators. In their opinion it directly reflects on the quality and safety standards employed by the operator and they would rather pay a high price and choose a trip offered by a certified operator

Cost factor: While an Indian traveller has started looking at adventure sports, yet, the high cost attached to certain sports for example high altitude trekking etc. force 58% people to change their mind from undertaking them

Health factor: While 62% respondents feltthey are physically prepared to participate in an adventure activity or extreme sport, 40% said they undergo a fitness routine when planning to engage in a strenuous physical adventure activity/extreme sport on holiday

Company matters: About 69% are most comfortable taking such trips with their friends, followed by 40% of the respondents preferring spouses  

Preferred adventure sports destinations:

v  Goa retains top spot second year in a row as the favourite destination for adventure sports in India

v  Australia, New Zealand and Thailand remain in the top 5 favourite international destinations for adventure sports this year as well
