Mumbai airport officials said weather-related delays will continue for the next two months. "There will be an average delay of about 30 minutes," said an airport official. "The delay will be more on heavy rain days."
Low visibility is one of the main reasons for flight delays and diversions. Due to the presence of thunderclouds, visibility drops, making it impossible for flights to land. "On such days, there will be diversions and consequent delays," said an air traffic control (ATC) officer. Another reason for the delays is the circuitous route flights have to take to avoid dense clouds.
Emergency teams have been set up to deal with monsoon-related disturbances at the airport. "High-speed pumps are on standby to clear waterlogging, if any. Runway friction tests are being conducted at regular intervals to assess aircraft braking capacity," said an MIAL spokesperson.
