A committee headed by the Civil Aviation Ministry joint secretary submitted a report last month recommending measures to make airports more disabled friendly as well as charting out the airports and airlines’ responsibilities towards them.
A ministry official said its recommendations include parking for disabled passengers within 30 metres of the entrance to airport buildings; kiosks to facilitate movement of passengers to check-in counters from parking areas; and ramps.
The report recommends that airport operators be required to make terminal buildings disabled friendly as well as to hire complaint-resolution officers to handle their issues. The airlines are required to ensure that the aids and equipment needed by a disabled passenger are loaded last and offloaded first, and to provide entertainment commensurate with the needs of such passengers.
The report also recommends special care for expectant mothers, the elderly, and those suffering from cancer or heart disease.
