In a bid to give a facelift to the Kolkata riverfront, Mamata Banerjee has asked Rites, a central agency, to submit a detailed report for setting up some of the elegant structures -- Kolkata Tower, Kolkata Gateway, city heritage museum and Kolkata mayor's office -- between Babughat and Fairlie Place.

As per a report in the TOI, the chief minister has plans to set up a heritage culture zone along the river bank. For implementation of the plan, Rites has suggested removal of the Babughat bus stand. Moreover, the agency wants to pull down the walls along the bank as it obstructs a full view of the river. Rites suggested an underground track in between Princep Ghat and Bagbazar for circular railway.

If things go according to the plan, there will be places for meditation apart from a number of cafeterias, food joints and parks along the 12 km river bank. The ferry ghats will get a new look with decorated sheds and special seats for passengers. Even special ferry services will be introduced to encourage people to make trips along the river.
