Informing the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Vijaykumar Gavit, Tourism Minister, Maharashtra said, “We are trying to get World Heritage status for Lonar Lake considering its historical importance. The salt water lake was created due to a meteor hit on the Earth.”
Gavit said that the municipal council concerned had taken measures to prevent sewage water from seeping into the lake. However, the municipal council needs Rs three crore for cleaning the water and it has only Rs 1.5 crore. The civic body also needs a report from the state pollution board on the issue. “We will submit the report to the pollution board within six months to seek permission for cleaning the lake water. The remaining funds will be made available accordingly,” added Gavit.
