Maharashtra Tourism has laid out an aggressive plan to market not only the State’s destinations, but also its culture and cuisine.

“This year we have a publicity budget of Rs 50 crore compared to Rs 18 crore last year,” Jagdish Patil, Managing Director, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), said, adding the money would be spent on aggressively promoting the State through television commercials, roadshows and events in 10 Indian cities as well as in Europe and the US. With 10 commercials ready, the TV campaign is set to go on air in the middle of May.

MTDC is planning an independent pavilion at the World Travel Market, the travel industry exhibition to be held in London in November. “We also plan to participate in festivals and exhibitions in Switzerland, France and Dubai,” Patil said.

This year, the Maharashtra Government has allocated nearly Rs 300 crore for creating tourism infrastructure. Patil said around Rs 100 crore of this would go to acquiring 1,400 acres of land for the proposed Oceanarium that would recreate the underwater world from Antartica to the tropics.
