The district collector headed Local Advisory Committee (LAC) has been given powers to select and recommend places for development as class B and class C tourist destinations in the districts by the State Tourism & Cultural Affairs department.

LAC was formed in November 2010 by the department for effective implementation of the regional tourism development scheme and distribution of funds for development of tourist places in the state.

According to a recent Government Resolution (GR), the committee would select class B and class C tourist places and recommend them to the state government and the district planning committee respectively as per report by ENS.

"While selecting places with the potential to be developed as tourist destinations, criteria that are used for pilgrimage places cannot be applied to places like beaches, forts, sanctuaries and hill stations. One will have to exercise a great deal of flexibility to accommodate adventure sports, agro-tourism and water sports," said S M Bhandarkar, additional secretary, Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs.

To exercise such flexibility, powers have been given to the local advisory committee.
