Maharashtra's cultural affairs ministry has decided to grant Rs5 lakh to each district for organizing cultural festival showcasing talent from the area.
"This concept will be introduced from this year with a view to boost tourism in the state. Every district has a unique identity and culture and through such festivals, this will be promoted," said state minister for cultural affairs Sanjay Deotale.
Describing the nature of these festivals, the minister informed that initially, these will be a three-day affair with the first day being reserved for town-level artistes to showcase their talent. On the second day, district-level artists and troupes will perform while on final day, established artists and groups from all over the state will perform as per a report in TOI.
"We will increase both the fund amount and also the number of days, after gauging the response that the festival garners. The aim is to preserve and promote rich culture and heritage of the country and also to get some revenue out of it. We are also looking for sponsors for these festivals," he said. The minister informed that the government had launched a scheme called 'Maharashtra Rajya Jatan Sangopan Yojana' about five years back to preserve old forts and buildings. However, it has failed to evoke any response.
