Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Thursday announced a special 10-year scheme to boost tourism in Sindhudurg.

He directed that the water, electricity and other such charges should not be hiked in the district besides stressing the need for projects like the ongoing Sea World aquarium, five-star hotels and Disneyland to boost tourism.

Chavan said he would meet Union Minister for Cultural Affairs Kumari Selja to request more funds for the state archeology department for the maintenance of Raigad, Sindhudurg and Vijaydurg forts among others along the coast.

Chavan also directed changes in the tourism policy, owing to which tourist schemes and projects will now require renewal of various licences once in five years as compared to the existing requirement of once every year.

In a meeting organised by Chavan on Thursday to bring about the changes, tourism minister Chhagan Bhujbal said since tourism is a department that employs the most number of people worldwide, Maharashtra should ensure that the process of issuing licences is not cumbersome.
