The historical fortress city of Kalinjar in Banda district will soon be developed into a cultural tourism circuit by improving infrastructure and security conditions. Plans are also afoot to set up an art institute for propagating medieval arts of the region and a museum in Kalinjar located in the drought-hit Bundelkhand region.

Though only 100 km from Khajuraho, a World Heritage Site and visited by thousands of visitors every year, hardly any tourists visit the Kalinjar hill fort. The reasons cited are absence of security and facilities for tourists. In the past, the fort, because of its deserted surroundings, often earned the notoriety of being a hangout for local kidnapping gangs.

The state government has now decided to completely overhaul the tourism circuit around Kalinjar. The District Magistrate of Banda, G S Naveen Kumar, said he has asked the tourism department consultant to submit a report on developing the infrastructure and security in the area.

Kumar said they want the tourists to stay at Kalinjar when they come to see the fort. He said tourists often pay a short visit to Kalinjar while visiting Khajuraho and Chitrakoot but if they do not stay there, no local tourism can be developed.
