The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) plans to focus on Pune as an upcoming tourist place by promoting less frequented places located in the city and adjoining areas.
The locations identified as potential tourist sites in the 'district tourism plan' are Parvati forest area, Vetal and Hanuman Tekdi area, fort of Chakan, Jejuri plateau, Ghod dam, Bhatgar dam near Bhor, Bedse caves near Lonavla, Bhandara hill in Dehu, Madhe ghat near Raigad district and Science Park, Pimpri-Chinchwad, among others.
The MTDC, as part of the plan, is currently undertaking an extensive exercise to identify existing and new sites and plan infrastructure needed here to attract more tourists to Pune as per a TOI report.
The MTDC is currently preparing a tourism master plan for each district in the state. The district collectors have been directed to make a tourism plan for their respective district with the help of MTDC and consultants.
The plan, which is still in its preliminary stages, involves mapping all tourist destinations in the district, identifying potential spots, finding out gaps in tourism infrastructure and suggesting requirements. During the later stages, tourism circuits within the district will be prepared for the benefit of tourists. "The list of new, potential sites is still tentative and we are yet to hold discussions with the owners of these sites. Identification of new sites is the first step. These spots have been listed after field visits and by means of information from locals and government records," said a source involved in the process of drafting the plan.
Sources added that many tourist spots from the district will be listed for infrastructure upgrade in the plan, as the basic tourist facilities have been lacking here. "As far as new spots are concerned, Bedse caves near Lonavla have a good potential. Everybody goes to Karla or Bhaja caves, but few know about Bedse caves. If the infrastructure is developed here, these could be included in the list of potential tourist spots," the source said.
