MTDC to organize Sahyadri festival in Kolhapur from 10 to 12 January 2014

The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is making last-minute preparations for its first Sahyadri festivalto be held in Kolhapur from January 10 to 12. The state-run corporation is looking for a suitable place, such as Shivaji Stadium, for the festival.

The festival will exhibit stalls showcasing traditional Kolhapuri cuisine, jaggery and how it is made using traditional equipments and Kolhapuri chappal among others.

"We are finalizing the arrangements for the festival but are still stuck with the location. We were exploring some central locations in the city. However, MTDC is yet to get confirmation from the authorities. Once we finalize the location, we can confirm the dates. The tentative dates are January 10 to 12," said MTDC general manager Kishori Gadre.

The festival would be aimed at promoting tourism the city as the next destination for food and nature lovers. "MTDC has been experimenting with different locations to explore tourism opportunities. The Sahyadri festival is a yet another step in this direction. The department has had good experiences from previous festivals in Konkan and other parts of the state. We are hoping that the event would get a good response in Kolhapur as well," Gadre added.

MTDC has announced the second Chikoo festival in Bordi in Thane district in February 2014. According to MTDC officials, the festival received an overwhelming response last year. The festival comprises a Chikoo safari, Warli art exhibition, folk dance and local cuisine. The department is trying to repeat the same pattern in Kolhapur.
