The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) is formulating strategies to encourage tourism to help boost the state's economy by attracting foreigners and also increasing foreign exchange earnings.

As part of the exercise, MTDC's resorts may soon be categorized as three-star or five-star, an official of the corporation said. The tourism corporation also intends to develop tourism packages to generate revenue, build tourism-linked human resource in the state, and design a plan to ensure tourists' security against unforeseen disasters such as natural calamities or terrorist attacks.

An MTDC official told TOI that the tourism corporation is currently seeking consultants to design and plan business enhancement initiatives. "The major focus is on tourist security. After the Uttarakhand floods and assaults on foreign tourists in various parts of the country, it has become imperative to draw up a plan for tourist security when they are in the state. The union government has also recently sent out guidelines to all the state governments regarding this," he said.
