Direct flights from Lucknow to Baghdad and Najaf in Iraq are soon to become a reality. Officials from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) have confirmed reports of at least two airlines being keen on operating flights to these destinations as Lucknow has adequate traffic for these cities.

Chaudhary Ajit Singh, union minister for civil aviation, had received a request from the All-India Shia Personal Law Board, last year, asking for starting flights on the Lucknow-Bagdad route.

AAI has given the green signal to Spice Jet to operate domestic and international flights from the Lucknow airport. Reason being that both the terminals of Lucknow are operational and the airport authority is in a position to handle more flights. The operations are scheduled to start from January 20 but may take the airlines 10 more days for fluent operations.

The AAI is facing a few hurdles at Lucknow airport. The runway at the airport measures 8,448 meters, which is ideal for landing small and mid-sized aircrafts. But, big aircrafts like Boeing 747 and 757 require a minimum of 12,000 meters of runway.
