The Lolaab valley in the border district of Kupwara is being developed as a niche destination for the high end tourists in the valley.
“Lolaab valley has opened new vistas for Kashmir tourism. Concerted efforts are being put in place to showcase Lolaab globally. In near future this valley would become hub of tourism activities,” said Ghulam Ahmad Mir, J&K minister of tourism.
Situated at an altitude of 5,564 feet, Lolaab valley is surrounded by lofty mountains with a dense forest cover. Gushing streams, exotic flora and fauna, natural caves and the rich wildlife makes the tourist spot more distinct and attractive for the nature loving tourists.
For the last 23 years the Lolaab valley has been the hub of militants given its topography. Scores of militants have been killed by the security forces in several encounters.
But this is a passé now. Peace is gradually returning which has encouraged the tourism planners to put the Lolaab valley back on the tourism map and reclaim the title of “land of love and beauty” as per a report in DNA.
“The Lolaab Valley, popularly known as the land of love and beauty, is now once again in the limelight with the efforts by tourism department,” said Mir.
Elated by the response from stake holders, the government is now organizing a promotional festival at Lolaab, Bangus and Drangyari to attract the tourist to these spots.
The concerned authorities have been directed to identify and showcase the potential areas like Machil Pastures, adventure track routes to attract tourists from outside the state
“The valley is covered with majestic mountains with number of fresh springs and variety of herbs and flowers. Lolaab has been a favorite trekking route for foreign tourists a few decades ago. One of the famous trekking route leads to Asia’s largest freshwater Lake Wullar. We can market these routes to attract tourists,” said Mir.
