Unhygenic dhabas, stinking temporary toilets, lax medical services and absence of emergency shelters are making Rohtang pass, the topmost tourism draw of Himachal, cry for amenities for the comfort and security of tourists.

Being the only tourist spot of the country where tourists can find snow round the year, Rohtang pass generates sizeable revenue for the government. Though famous worldwide for its scenic beauty, there are no basic facilities worth mentioning for the tourists. No permanent shelter has been built here for emergency situations, which is a common occurrence here. And, medical teams are available only during summer season as per a TOI report.

Though over 25 lakh tourists visit the pass every year, there are only a few temporary and poorly maintained toilets here, which fail to cope with the rush of tourists, while a couple of police personnel takes care of the security requirements of the tourists.

Though the condition of road to Rohtang pass is being improved, tourists end up paying Rs 30 for a paltry cup of tea and Rs 80 for half-boiled noodles at unhygienic dhabas, sources said. Fear of getting stranded after sudden snowfall or landslide always haunts the tourists as they know that no shelters have been built to handle such situations. Only some seasonal dhabas in Rohtang and Marhi provide shelters to stranded tourists, they said.
